Root Enhancement:
Creating new roots using thread grafting

Material for root grafting is carefully removed from the pot. The tree is slid out sideways, rather than pulled up out of the pot.

The future soil level is determined to best show rootage.

Areas where new roots are needed are determined and marked.

Holes are drilled for the thread grafts.

Whips for thread grafting are carefully prepared. Any branches or buds are removed. The bark, where it will be in contact with the host tree, is lightly rubbed to expose the top of the cambium.

Whips are pulled through the tree until they contact the edges of the drilled hole.

Whips are wired up and out, away from the foliage, so as not interfere with branches which will remain. Once the graft has taken, the whips can be cut off (usually after one year's growth).

New roots have been created!
